Intent, Implementation and Impact
Reading
Our Intent
At Boxmoor Primary School we aim to produce:
- Children who want to read;
- Enthusiastic, independent readers;
- Efficient readers able to adopt a variety of strategies flexibly;
- Children who have developed an established reading habit;
- Children who are aware of the need to be critical and reflective about the material they read;
- Children who are able to access information efficiently from a range of sources including ICT.
Implementation
At Boxmoor we give reading a high priority in our curriculum, as it the ability to read and understand which opens up learning for children. To do this we do the following:
- Provide high quality teaching and learning for daily systematic synthetic phonic sessions using the Essential Letters and Sounds phonics programme and deliver appropriate interventions.
- Provide our children with a variety of high quality reading materials and opportunities, which will enable them to develop as lifelong readers with a love of reading. We believe it is essential that, by the end of their primary education at Boxmoor, all pupils are able to read fluently and with confidence. They will have the reading skills needed to successfully research in any subject in their forthcoming secondary education.
- Enhance all children’s vocabulary and use of Standard English both written and orally. We believe the development of children’s vocabulary is a vital tool in learning and understanding the full curriculum. In addition we provide frequent opportunities for children to communicate within classrooms to develop language and communication skills.
- Encourage book talk and develop our children to become inquisitive readers who ask questions about the text.
- Support children and parents in taking reading into the home. Our families are key partners in developing their children’s knowledge and we are grateful to all our families who support their child’s reading. We provide workshops on phonics and reading and encourage parents to support children to read at least three times a week outside of school.
- Improve our teaching and learning in light of the latest research. This has included a focus on phonic updates, development of inference and how to improve children’s reading prosody.
Impact:
We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
- Pupil discussions, surveys and interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice).
- Reading Response work
- EYFS Tapestry
- Governor monitoring with our subject English link governor.
- Progress records and data overviews
- Benchmarking against national tests
- Subject Action and School Development Plans cycle.
