Art
Curriculum Intent
Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. (National Curriculum)
Art teaching at Boxmoor Primary School aims to follow the specifications of the National Curriculum; providing a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum and ensuring the progressive development of art concepts, knowledge and skills.
At Boxmoor we believe that art plays an integral role in helping children to feel part of a community, therefore we provide opportunities for all children to create and enjoy art both in class and showcase to an audience. We do this through art displays, assemblies and entering competition where children can showcase their talent. At Boxmoor we also love creating art for the community by participating in Christmas card making for the elderly. Lessons enable children to being creative, learning about inspirational artists and creating art work through the use of different media and techniques.
The aims of our Art curriculum are to develop pupils who:
- Produce creative work
- Exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
- Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
- Know about great artists, craft makers and designers
- Understand the historical and cultural development of their art form
Implementation
Art teaching at Boxmoor Primary School delivers the requirements of the National Curriculum through divided up the curriculum amongst the year groups with respect to appropriateness of content at different ages and natural curriculum links with other subjects as well as teaching all areas of art media. We have worked collaboratively in order to include more 3D work into our curriculum.
Art lessons are broken down into half-termly units and an emphasis is placed on art vocabulary, allowing children to talk about pieces of art using the correct terminology. Each unit of work has:
- An inspirational artists, craft makers and designers, and opportunity to understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
- A media to explore, becoming proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles, collage or digital technology.
- Techniques to improve their skills in colour, pattern, line, shape, texture and form.
- Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
- Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
- The gaining of subject specific vocabulary
Within the EYFS setting, art is an integral part of children’s learning journey. Expressive art and design is about being creating with materials. The children safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function. The children share their creations with their friends and explain the process they have used.
Pupils have the opportunity to join the school art club and to participate in art competitions. The school art club is open to children in Year 2 - 4 on a weekly basis, with the average number of pupils being in the range of 15-20. Pupils in the school art club meet on a Tuesday after school and focus on creating large pieces of art and learning new techniques and having fun!
Impact
Our Art Curriculum is planned to demonstrate progression and build on and embed current skills. We focus on progression of knowledge and skills in the different artist components and teaching of vocabulary also forms part of the units of work. If children are achieving the knowledge and skills in lessons, then they are deemed to be making good or better progress.
We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
- Pupil discussions and interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice).
- Art sketch book and display looks by the Curriculum Coordinator.
- Governor monitoring with our subject art link governor.
- Annual reporting and tracking of standards across the curriculum.
- Photo and video evidence of the pupils practical learning.
The impact of our art curriculum is also measured in the uptake of our art club.
