Curriculum Intent

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. (National Curriculum)

Art teaching at Boxmoor Primary School aims to follow the specifications of the National Curriculum; providing a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum and ensuring the progressive development of art concepts, knowledge and skills.

At Boxmoor, we believe that art plays an integral role in helping children to feel part of a community. Therefore, we provide opportunities for all children to create and enjoy art, both in class and after school. We showcase and display our talent through art displays, art clubs and external art competitions. At Boxmoor we also love creating art for the community by participating in Christmas card making for the elderly.

The aims of our Art curriculum develop pupils who:

  • Produce creative work.
  • Explore their ideas and record their experiences.
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers.
  • Understand the historical and cultural development of their art form.

Implementation

Art teaching at Boxmoor Primary School delivers the requirements of the National Curriculum by dividing content up in an age-appropriate way. We have worked collaboratively in order to include more Sculpture and 3D work into our curriculum.

Art lessons are broken down into half-termly units and an emphasis is placed on art vocabulary, allowing children to talk about pieces of art using the correct terminology. Each unit of work has:

  • Inspirational artists, craft makers and designers - Opportunities to understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
  • Media to explore, becoming proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles, collage or digital technology.
  • Techniques to improve their skills in colour, pattern, line, shape, texture and form.
  • Opportunities to record their experiences.
  • Specific and rich vocabulary.

The school art club is open to children in Year 2 and 3 on a weekly basis. Pupils in the school art club meet on a Tuesday after school and focus on creating large pieces of art, learning new techniques and having fun!

Impact

Our Art Curriculum is planned to progress, build on and embed existing skills. If children are achieving the knowledge and skills in lessons, then they are deemed to be making good or better progress.

We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • Pupil discussions and interviews about their learning (pupil voice).
  • Art sketch book and display looks by the Curriculum Coordinator.
  • Governor monitoring with our subject art link governor.
  • Annual reporting and tracking of standards across the curriculum.
  • Photo and video evidence of pupils practical learning.

The impact of our art curriculum is also measured in the uptake of our art club.
