Intent
Boxmoor Primary School believes that Physical Education (PE), experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. We aim to develop a love of sport and physical activity in all children and inspire them to become lifelong active people. We want all children to develop and improve the fundamental skills needed to access all physical activity such as invasion games, gymnastics or dance through the delivery of high-quality teaching and learning opportunities. At Boxmoor, Children will understand the importance of healthy competition against either themselves (personal best) or other children, the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle and the role that physical activity plays in achieving this, how to swim, basic survival skills in water and life skills such as team work, independence and resilience. Children will learn and understand the importance of PE and the big role it plays in their own mental wellbeing.
Implementation
In EYFS, PE is one of the Prime Areas of Learning and underpins the development of other skills. As such, it is given lots of focus and is encouraged using both the indoor and outdoor provision. Specific areas and resources have been developed for children to learn and practise specific skills including balancing, climbing, jumping, throwing and catching, kicking and moving in a range of ways. Children in the EYFS are taught about keeping and being healthy from what they eat, how they look after their bodies and the reasons that being active are important. In KS1, children are taught two, one-hour long PE sessions a week teaching a variety of invasion games, dance or gymnastics. Children build on the fundamental skills and aim to master basic skill movements such as running, throwing, jumping and catching as well as beginning to develop balance, agility and coordination. Children are introduced to team games as well as individual sports. Basic tactics are introduced to the children as well as competitive sports whether that be competing against other children, teams or themselves. A healthy lifestyle is taught through Science in Year 2. In KS2, children are also taught two, one-hour long PE session a week teaching a variety of invasion games, dance, gymnastics, Swimming or outdoor adventurous activities. Children will learn how to apply all skills taught throughout their school journey in isolation and combination. They develop an understanding of how to improve, evaluate themselves and others and recognise their own success. There is a bigger focus in both competition against themselves or other children for example in athletics and basketball. The children have lots of opportunity to take part in competitions, events and festival set up and run by the local school partnership programme (DSSN). PE lessons are tailored where possible to work on the skills or sport that the children will need for an upcoming event. This gives them a purpose and focus on why they need the skills and a place to use them. DSSN events are also categorised to give all children a fair opportunity. From Compete, Aspire and Develop to inspire and engage all children are able to take part in an activity and find the joy in what they are doing. At Boxmoor, we offer a variety of different lunch and after school clubs including cooking club, basketball, football, netball, multisport, dance and many more. We also organise a range of workshops to help inspire the children to try new things. This includes boxing workshops, skate and scoot, taekwondo, skipping and dance. We also have many specialist come in to support with staff CPD but also to encourage children to try a new sport or join a local club. Active classrooms are encouraged with resources such as GoNoodle, iMoves, Cosmic Kids and the Daily Mile. A group of Year 6 children are invited to be Sports Leaders each year and work with the PE coordinator to set up events, festivals, lunchtime activities, personal challenges, themed events and sports day. These children learn the importance of leadership and taking on more responsibility.
Impact
Children leave school having a love of sport and physical activity both in and out of school, with this continuing into later life. We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun and inspires children to try new and exciting sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills to lead a healthy lifestyle. These skills will support them later on in life to develop healthy living and good wellbeing. All children will be able to discuss the importance of a healthy lifestyle and how this is achieved as well as developed skills that underpin life such as teamwork, sportsmanship, self-motivation, resilience and independence.
